Lite-1 Story
Lite-1 was founded by two internationally recognized biodesigners who are deeply passionate about revolutionizing the colour industry. With a background in the design industry, these women are determined to combat greenwashing and introduce true, sustainable change. Witnessing firsthand the destructive and horrifying impact of the fashion and design industry on the environment, they bravely left their comfortable industry jobs to embark on a scientific journey, transforming this toxic industry into a beacon of sustainability. "Impact first, business second" is their guiding principle, demonstrating a sincere commitment to rewriting the narrative of industry and planet in harmonious coexistence.
At Lite-1, we biofabricate solutions to the most complex issues of the time. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with industry and academia, we bridge the gap between novel innovations, systems, and society to introduce a circular and regenerative, yet profitable future.
Our unique approach involves leveraging the functions of microorganisms to cultivate the colour factories of the future. The microbes we work with have agency, and their pigments have purpose. Lite-1 represents a new way of understanding and interacting with colour, where colours are more than just aesthetics but a testament to our commitment to the environment.

MaRS Women in Cleantech: Lite-1 wins a spot in MaRS Women In Cleantech accelerator program recognizing them as one of the top 10 Women-led companies in Canada.
R&D Partnership: Lite-1 secures a partnership with leading biomanufacturing research facility The Verschuren Centre gaining access to their state-of-the-art Canadian facility and in-depth expertise to scale colourant production.
Awarded Funding: Lite-1 is awarded non-dilutive grants from Invest Nova Scotia and Bioenterprise to fund R&D and scale-up.
Foresight Graduation: The Lite-1 team successfully completed the Foresight Deliver program excelling in the Gate Review presentations.
Initiating Pilots: Lite-1 partners with clients to initiate pilot trials integrating Lite-1 dyes into their manufacturing processes to produce vibrant innovative new materials.
Academia Partnership: Lite-1 secures strategic partnerships with two leading labs at Simon Fraser University (SFU) for genetics and material science.
Lite-1 got into CDL Vancouver Climate stream. During this we will be paired with mentors who will make us even more bulletproof and show the world what we are truly made of. ⚡️
